Walking Stick Project FAQs

Since this is a community project, you may have some questions about how you can interact with the artwork and share your story with the project. If you have any questions that aren't answered down below, please feel free to reach out!

I found a stick! Now what do I do?

Take it for a hike down the path and have fun exploring and noticing the environment along the way. When you are finished with your hike, please leave the stick at a trailhead for the next walker to use. Then, please consider submitting a digital entry about your hike by emailing the artist, Jolie Chylack at jchylack@joliechylackstudio.com

Where do I leave the stick after my hike?

You should leave the stick at the trailhead where you found it. If you want though, you can move the stick to a different trailhead nearby. If you decide to move the stick, though, please do so within a few days and then let me know in your email submission just so I can keep track of where the sticks are!

Where can I find more sticks?

Check out the Walkabout Stick Map to get an idea of where you might find the sticks. Remember, though, these are "walking" sticks, and people are allowed to move them. Keep in mind that they may not always be as close to their original drop-off location stated on the map.

An interesting aspect of this project will be seeing where the sticks travel! You can keep up with project updates here on my website to learn about when new sticks are created and where they are placed. If you find a stick and it's not in its original map spot, feel free to let me know at jchylack@joliechylackstudio.com

What should be included in my submission?

If you choose to send in a submission, you should include:

1) The number of the stick (marked on the lower portion)

2) The date and location where you walked with and left the stick.

3) You can also include your own comments, thoughts, stories, ideas, photos or other artwork you have made after being inspired by the hike!

It is important to know that this project is about real lived experiences out on the trail. If you come across something that needs to be addressed, like trash on the trail, please mention this. We hope to generate community action and awareness about what is truly going on in our environment. Likewise, if you see something incredible, like people engaging in a planting or cleanup walk, let us know that too!  We also want to celebrate all the great things we see on the trail.

We ask that participants remain respectful with their submissions. This is a goodwill community project and inappropriate content will not be included.

All submissions should be sent to jchylack@joliechylackstudio.com.

What happens once I email in my submission?

Because this is a community project, keep in mind that whatever you share will be posted in the online community gallery as well as the studio's social media accounts. However, if you do not wish for your submission to be shared but you still want to contact me about the project, please let me know in your email and I won't share your submission online! â€‹
